Time management : Friends
January 14, 2008 — RyanOne of the funny things that happen to you when you start to work from home is that you realize you have to start making time fore friends. In today’ workplace, where we spend most of our daily lives, we already have instant access to friends (assuming you’re the friendly type) at work, so we don’t feel the need to spend any more time with them afterwards. Every workday our friendship quota is filled, and we’re satisfied with going home for some relaxing alone time.
Working from home however, is all about alone time. No friends, some family that you see everyday, it can be an isolating experience. Podcasts help, but in one embarrassing moment I was telling my girlfriend about a TV show that “my friend” was totally in love with, “my friend” being the host of a podcast I listen to. Yeah, it was that bad. For maybe a month it was like that, with my reactionary self not willing to go out because I was too lazy, until I finally realized that I had to MAKE time for my friends. This seems self evident in retrospect but it took a while to dawn on me.
So now, aside from seeing my girlfriend, I make sure to at least see one set of friends a week, so I don’t end up being a total hermit. I get home later and drunker more often than I should, but at least I’m happier and I’m keeping those connections alive.

Its not that bad until you find yourself talking to yourself or inanimate objects.

I have to start doing this too. I go to work, though I’m only at the office twice a week and I’m considerably less friendly than you are. Two years at this current job and a grand total of four friends! It’s not just the inertia that discourages me though, it’s also the hassle of coordinating skeds with terribly busy people. If they were more accessible I might less lazy about trying to make plans with them.

Yeah theres that extra effort. But once it becomes a habit you start forgetting about it really.
