Food links

Bloghopping can be a hunger inducing activity, especially when you stumble upon food sites.

I can’t think or a witty intro, so that’ll have to do.

Brooklyn Kitchen - A restaurant in Brooklyn apparently. The Potato Ginger Samosas had mymouth watering.

lil kian chu - Mika’s actually on my blogroll, but I thought I’d add her her for some local flavor. go back to some earlier posts to see the entries that made my mouth water. Just the mere image of the apple stuffed chicken (seen above) had me drooling.

CtrlAltChicken - This is probably the geekiest cooking show ever, hosted by Diggnation’s Alex Albrecht and his fiancee Heather. Episode 1: Chicken Cordon Bleu.

Sucks to be on a diet.

How to eat an MRE

In geek circles, MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) are the coolest thing ever when it comes to all things culinary. Imagine, having a “fresh, home cooked meal” in a bag? With a non-flammable heater that you just have to add water too? How cool is that? Too cool. But according to this former National Guardsman who takes you through a walkthrough of the process of preparing and eating an MRE, it’s not as good as I thought it was. I’d still want to try one though, if only for the experience.

I’m curious though, what do caucasians have against using spoons to eat? How is using a fork more civilized? Anyway, clicky the linky to get to the good stuff.

Jollibee pancake sandwich on trial

The verdict? While the use of pancakes instead of bread is an original and tasty idea, the sausage itself tastes too much like longganisa for my palate. The Pancake “bread” offers a delightfully creamy texture that mixes well with the eggs, cheese and sausage, but overall I like the saltier, more country-style sausage that McDonald’s sausage McMuffin has to offer.

I give the jollibee pancake sausage a B-.

I like sausages

I’ve loved sausage ever since the first time I ate a sausage McMuffin in McDonald’s.  What is this strange meat, I thought?  It’s kinda like a burger, but not quite.  It’s got more spices and flavor, and they only offer it for breakfast!  I always wondered how they made sausages, and now through the magic of the inernets I not only know how they make them, I’m also gonna try making some over the weekend.

I found the recipe over at slashfood, and if you’re interested go check it out and make your own batch as well!

Dammit, I’m hungry now.

Greenwich Sisig Pizza vs Red Egg Pizza

I just had both greenwich holiday specials, the sisig pizza, and the red egg pizza, and the sisig pizza wins hands down. I’d been wanting to taste both of these holiday special pizzas, and finally decided to do something about it today.

The sisig pizza captures the essence of sisig, with crunchy chicharon bits to boot, while the tomato sauce and cheese complement it perfectly as it swims inside your mouth. The Red egg pizza was by no means bad, but it tasted much like bibingka with a few slices of christmas ham for good measure.

With the Sisig pizza setting you back 150 pesos for a double sized pizza and the red egg special hitting you with 219 pesos, the sisig pizza is the clear favorite, and is the limited edition pizza that everyone should try.

Waffle Time Redux!

I was a little hungry on the way homelast night, and so I decided to try the other Waffle Time! flavors in order to give a more comprehensive review of the kiosk. Yes, I am a g33k.

Belgian chocolate P16: Worth a try to see if you like it, but for sixteen bucks I’d rather have me some “Canadian” Bacon. Also, it looks kind of gross since it’s gooey melted chocolate inside a waffle, and tastes nothing like Belgian chocolate.

German Cheese Franks P16: Where’s the cheese? I thought I tasted it, but I could see no evidence of it. At least it tastes better than “American” Hotdog, so go for this waffle snack if you want some meat.

Waffle Time!

As a frequent MRT commuter I give in to my hunger pangs every now and then lay down some coin for a snack at one of the many kiosks that dot most MRT stations. The Waffle Time kiosks, with their signature red and yellow (echoes of McDonalds?) color scheme and reasonable prices, are a favorite of mine. I recently found out that they have a presence on the web, and that they’re a wholly Filipino owned company. It’s curious that most of the models on their site are foreigners though. Anyhow, since I’ve tried four of their flavors already, I thought I’d give my thoughts on them here, just in case an MRT commuter passes through and is wondering what to get.

The flavors are :

Cheese P10: A staple snack for the budget minded commuter, you can’t go wrong with a cheese waffle for ten bucks.

American Hotdog P12: There is nothing American about this hotdog. It’s tiny and barely tastes like anything, but it will do if you’re in need of some “meat”.

Canadian Bacon P16: I don’t know why it’s Canadian, but it kicks the crap out the American Hotdogs. With a salty and slightly sour taste that complements the waffle, this is the best of the bunch, but slightly more pricey.

Chicken ala King P16: Don’t bother with this. It feels like they opened some canned chicken and threw in some frozen “mixed vegetables for good measure, then let it cook in the waffler.
